RESOURCES

Hi! On this page I’ve gathered some resources around dance and choreography that I  find helpful. Please do share the link with friends who might benefit from the info and pls let me know if you have something else that might be added onto the page. Also, if you read/watch something from the list and would like to discuss, drop me a message and we can arrange a meet-up :)

ARTIST DEVELOPMENT + COMMUNITIES

Interval Collective“Interval is an artist led collective founded in 2010 in Bristol, UK.

We are a group of artists whose work spans live art, contemporary theatre, dance, visual art, cabaret, writing, community work, audio and more.

We support each other, share, critique and push new ideas and research. We are interested in what a collective can be and in finding new ways in which to support each other’s development. We offer an encouraging and focused space to experiment and go forward with the supportive clout of a collective behind you.

We share knowledge and resources including an office and rehearsal space at The Exchange, Corn Street (above St Nick's Market).“

Spike Island Associates“Spike Island Associates is a professional development network for artists, curators, designers, writers and producers at all stages of their careers. Members span multiple disciplines and share a common interest in collaboration, experimentation and a desire to learn new skills.

We programme a year-round calendar of events for Associates, including:
  • One-to-one meetings and group crits with artists, curators, writers and critics from across the world
  • Reading and discussion groups
  • Skills workshops: pricing and selling your work, fundraising, bookkeeping and finances, digital and practical skills
  • Talks and study sessions related to contemporary art practice
  • Away days to galleries and artist-led spaces”

Pervasive Media Studio Residency (unpaid)
“Pervasive Media Studio has around 200 Residents exploring creative technology by making work alongside each other. The Resident community is built upon mutual exchange; we ask people to participate actively in an ongoing way.

Residency offers the following;
  • Connection to other Residents and our wider network of partners with whom you can share ideas as they develop
  • Ad-hoc support with business, technology and artistic development (including support to think about climate impact and inclusive practice)
  • Free desk space that you can access 7 days a week
  • Bookable meeting rooms, workshop space and a small maker space (with some access to equipment)”

Pervasive Media Studio — MakeShift workshops
Make Shift is Watershed's place for early stage creatives who are interested in creative technology and/or film practice*. Through free events and creative development opportunities, it is a space to:
  • CONNECT with peers and potential collaborators
  • LEARN from each other and established practitioners
  • DEVELOP skills and knowledge
  • IMAGINE possibilities for your practice and how your work intersects with the wider world
  • CREATE new work or develop existing ideas
  • SHARE your work at Watershed
  • REFLECT on your practice considering where you have been and where you could go
* In my experience, the events are not specific to these areas at all

Creative Youth Network“Creative Youth Network enables young people, no matter what their background or circumstances, to reach their own potential”*

*Technically it’s for 18-25 year-olds. They offer events, commissions, workshops, etc.

Neurodiverse Art In MotionNAIM (Neurodiverse Art In Motion) has been set up to create a network for neurodiverse artists in Bristol and the South-West.

With the support of Art in Motion, an organisation that collaborates with learning-disabled and neurodivergent artists to make artwork, NAIM will be focused on developing a network and programme to nurture and support artists and their work.

In terms of performance“IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE is a keywords anthology designed to provoke discovery across artistic disciplines.”

Independent Dance Digital Library“Independent Dance’s digital library houses an extensive range of research material to read, watch and listen to. This material is from the past 15 years of our near-40 year history and is drawn from work ID has programmed, or with which ID has a direct connection.

By re-releasing this archive and creating this new digital space as a home for documentation of our programme and research, ID aims to create a non-academic, dance research resource which is freely available to all.“

Syllabus Project“Syllabus was born from a conversation about discovery and learning. In discussing the ways that cultural artifacts travel through a society, we imagined how a syllabus could function as a creative tool that allows you to do things like:

i. present what you feel is important for others to experience or consume;
ii. group items together in ways that shade and refine their meaning;
iii. apply a conceptual or idiosyncratic approach to the syllabus form;
iv. develop rogue pedagogies.“

*A very cool website! Love it

Material for the Spine“Material for the Spine, a movement study is an interactive online publication (Web-app). Conceived by the dancer Steve Paxton as both a meditation on the spine and a technical approach, Material for the Spine focuses on experience acquired along his artistic journey: his study on walking, his experience as a dancer, the development of Contact Improvisation and his Aïkido practice. This 4 hour long interactive publication online features the technique in its formal dimension and underlying thought process. Exercises and physical explorations are combined with lectures and documents of original performances, aiming to “bring consciousness to the dark side of the body, its hidden aspect or its interior.””
