MOVEMENT
MEDIATIONS

I run movement mediations in gallery spaces to faciliate visitors' playful engagement with the artwork

Each mediation is different and depends upon the themes
and materials of the exhibition. Drawing on my experience
of leading more conventional tours, I first study the artist(s) and their work to build structure and narrative, sometimes highlighting one theme to explore it collaboratively. However, importantly,
the mediation centres around subjective experience of the visitors rather than the facts about the exhibition or the artist(s).

The mediation begins with a gentle warm-up and introduction. Then, I suggest some movement scores and prompts for discussion inspired by the artwork. Normally, a mediation lasts 1-1.5 hours. No prior experience in dance is required from participants, and the mediation can be tweaked for the specific needs of visitors.

With this format, I am interested in facilitating visitors’ engagement with senses other than vision alone, opening up a dialogue around artworks in a non-hierarchical manner, and offering alternative presence in an often highly codified space of the art gallery.
